Ritchie Red Label
A Good beer for Good Times…
Ritchie Red Label is brewed to be refreshingly satisfying for everyday enjoyment. The people of Ritchie Town, in the Northern Cape of South Africa, know how to have a good time and this extra special ale is brewed in that spirit – to be shared with good friends. Crack the top, pour the crisp golden ale and enjoy ice cold. You deserve it !
1888 – Belgium Ale
The Northern Cape in 1866 was a hot and desolate place, especially for a young boy, Erasmus Jacobs. He amused himself by playing with the “klippies” he found on their farm near Hopetown – one which was found to be a diamond. Once work of the discovery spread, thousands of fortune seekers descended on the Kimberley area in search of diamonds, forming a myriad of small companies
In 1888 the great amalgamation took place between Rhodes, De Beers Mine and Barney Barnato’s Kimberley Central Mining Company, consolidating all the haphazard mining ventures and creating a monopoly over the entire world’s diamond market.
1888 Belgian Ale is inspired by these events which prove that one small discovery can lead to world changing events
Barneys Blues
When Barney Barnato arrived in Kimberley in 1873, the diamond industry was all but stagnant. The general view was that only the soft yellow soil in the area held diamonds. But Barney believed that the biggest diamonds were yet to be found in the hard, deep “blue ground”.
Gambling all his capital on his conviction, Barney bought four claims and worked the difficult blue ground with very poor results. But then he started to haul buckets of large diamonds. Legend has it that one day, in one hour, Barney unearthed 30 diamonds! He became stinking rich before the year was out.
The gem of a pilsner is inspired by Barney’s belief that dreams can come true if you stand by your conviction.
New Rush
The discovery of diamonds in 1866 led to the first ever diamond rush to the banks of the Orange River. At the height of the rush to these river diggings, diamonds were even found in the mud brick walls of the farmhouse at Bultfontein!
Five years later a cook, Esau Damoense, was sent onto nearby Colesberg Kopje to dig a punishment for being drunk. There he unearthed three diamonds. As word spread to nearby diggings, it sparked off the famous “New Rush” as diamond crazed miners stampeded the site. Within a month nearly three thousand men were attending the hillock into what became the world-renowned Kimberley Mine.
New Rush Indian Pale Ale is inspired by this magnificent accident that led to unimaginable glory for Kimberley.
Blistering Scotchman
It was in the Battle of Magersfontein in December 1899, during the 2nd Anglo Boer War, that Lord Methuen sent the Scottish Highland Brigade first into battle. Unaware of the Boer entrenchments at the foot of a koppie, the Scots were surprised to see Boer soldiers suddenly pop out of the ground and opening fire. At close range and with no chance of retreat, the Scots hit the ground and remained there for most of the day, parched of thirst and kilted bare legs crimson in the Kimberley sun.
Blistering Scotchman, a thirst-quenching, robust red ale is inspired by the Highlands Brigade’s bravery and the Boer’s ingenuity.
40 Boxes
As a sorrowful, sickly youth, Barney Barnato dreamt of greater things while begging from theatre-goers outside the Garrick Theatre in Middelsex, England. His life changed when, upon hearing of the adventure and riches of the Kimberley diamond fields, he scraped together £30 and 40 boxes of doubtful quality cigars as his sole capital and headed for the southern tip of Africa. Once in Kimberley, he pounded the koppies for stray diamonds, dug deep in the hard blue ground and soon became one of the most successful businessmen South Africa has ever seen.
40 Boxes, a refreshing complex Weiss beer, is a nod to the resource, spirit and sheer bloody-mindedness of Barney
